USC Hosts Special Lecture Honoring Dr. Monica Ryoo’s Legacy

On February 19, the USC Doheny Memorial Library will host a special lecture featuring Dr. Monica Ryoo as part of the USC Korean American Legacy Special Lecture Series.
The event, organized by CARE Projects and hosted by Christopher HK Lee and Ashley Park, will take place from5 PM to 7 PM.
Dr. Monica Ryoo, a distinguished radiation oncologist, has dedicated over 50 years to treating cancer patients and advancing medical research. Born in post-war Korea, she overcame economic hardships to become a leader in both medicine and community service. Her contributions extend beyond healthcare, as she has played a pivotal role in promoting education and cultural initiatives for Korean Americans and non-heritage students.
As the founder of the Foundation for Korean Language & Culture (FKLAC), Dr. Ryoo has worked to create socioeconomic opportunities and foster cross-cultural understanding. Her leadership in community projects and volunteer work underscores her lifelong commitment to social justice and education.
Beyond her medical and philanthropic work, Dr. Ryoo is a writer and advocate for Korean heritage. She bridges cultural divides, sharing her insights on perseverance, service, and embracing one’s identity. Her inspiring journey serves as a testament to the power of dedication and giving back to the community.
The special lecture series, hosted in collaboration with the USC Dornsife Korean Studies Institute, the USC Korean Heritage Library, and the K.W. Lee Center for Leadership, aims to honor Korean American pioneers and celebrate their lasting impact. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Dr. Ryoo and other influential figures, gaining insight into the rich history of Korean American contributions.
